Both are Easter symbols.
Both are integral to Christian life and both are major foci of our Easter Vigil, as we light the Paschal candle from the New Fire, and passing the flame in procession, symbolically spread the light of Christ in a darkened world in anticipation of the celebration of his glorious resurrection.
Also prominent is the water of the baptismal font in which we are “buried with Christ in his death”, as St. Paul says, that we may be raised with him to newness of life. This is the manner in which every Christian participates in the Paschal mystery of Christ’s suffering, death and resurrection in a tangible way, as an icon of the deeper participation in this mystery by which we are called to live lives given over to Christ, dying to the ways of sin and death, and rising with him to newness of life not just in the next world, but in this present reality.
The greater our participation, the greater becomes the in-breaking of the realm of God into our everyday reality. These powerful symbols, though present in some form throughout the year, will be prominent in our midst from Easter, through the Easter season to the Feast of Pentecost.
