When Rev. Jenifer first suggested the theme of Into the World for the start of the Pentecost season, it seemed so right for more than one reason. “Into the World” was exactly where the Holy Spirit drove those first disciples to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ and to witness to the love of God at work in the world. And the Holy Spirit continues to do the same for disciples like us even today.
Reminding us of that is a wonderful corrective to the tendency to focus, with all good intention, on the work within the church as an end in itself. All our ministries within the church are meant to serve and nourish our going out into the world to minister and to witness in Christ’s name. Every week at the end of the Eucharist we are sent out – “Let us go forth into the world rejoicing in the power of the Spirit!” Or “Go in peace to love and serve the Lord!” Or “Let us go forth in the name of Christ!”
To hear each other’s stories enlightens and encourages each of us to listen to the way God is calling us to do likewise. Through the excellent work of Justin Baker our stories of Into the World are beginning to blossom on our website, both in written and audio form.
But here is another advantage. Knowing each other’s stories helps us to know each other better and draws us ever closer in community and fellowship of prayer and support, and also of friendship and connection. It’s the joy of sharing our bio while we are yet living instead of learning such interesting things about one another from the last page of our funeral leaflet!
So share your story and learn those of others as we strive to “Go forth into the world, rejoicing in the power of the Spirit!
