Feasts & Fasts

Isaiah 58:6 Is not this the fast that I choose: …
Isaiah 58:7 Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; …and not to hide yourself from your own kin?
It’s the feasting season, Thanksgiving, Christmas. But, nearly every day in the church is a Feast Day. The two great fast days of the church are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. More Anglo Catholic practice includes the eve of feast days. The observation of fast days is not mandatory. We are privileged to be able to choose.
However not all our neighbors and kin are as privileged. They are food insecure. Every day may be a fast they have not chosen.
Isaiah reminds us of the fast which God chooses. God’s fast is to share our bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into our house. And every week at St James’, through Food Pantry and Friday Soup Kitchen we do just that–choose God’s fast above all other options.
Won’t you join us? You are welcome to volunteer any time, but we especially need help this Thanksgiving Holiday. If you want to “fast” with us through our Food Ministries, please contact the parish office, 213-388-3417, or simply show up at the times appointed on the calendar on the second page of this Update.
