By a unanimous vote of the St. James’ Vestry, we are thrilled to announce The Rev. Kate Cress as the next Rector of St. James’ in-the-City.
Rev. Kate Cress currently serves as the Rector of Church of Our Savior in Somerset, Massachusetts since her ordination in 2009. Prior to her calling to the priesthood, Rev. Kate worked as a social scientist and teacher earning her Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Harvard University as well as her M.A. Ed from Brown University and M. Div from Boston University. In addition to her academic achievements, Mother Kate has spent a considerable amount of time abroad. She lived in Botswana for two years, three years in South Africa and Uganda, and two years in Korea.
Mother Kate’s acceptance of the call brings a positive conclusion to an extensive national search process. Our search began with a series of town hall style meetings with Rev. Canon Eric Law, founder of the renowned Kaleidoscope Institute. These meetings helped form the St. James’ Profile. This document compiles our history, who we are, where want to go, and what we need in a Rector. Once the profile was complete, the Diocese began accepting applications from all qualified applicants. Then, the Search Committee was formed to interview candidates and select the final three candidates for consideration by the Vestry. After receiving the finalists, the Vestry spent a weekend with each candidate before taking time to prayerfully discern the call. Through this process, Rev. Kate Cress stood out for her cultural understanding, strategic foresight, and pastoral enthusiasm.
The Vestry would like to thank our incredible Search Committee, led by Ingrid Finley-Scott, whom were dedicated in selecting three candidates for Vestry consideration and selection. Thank you, as well, to Peter Reinke, Jim Buonemani and Rev. John Kim for their assistance in the search process, and Rev. Betsy Anderson for serving as our Chaplain both for the Search Committee and the Vestry. A very special thanks to Rev. Jenifer Chatfield for stewarding the congregation through this time of transition with grace and ease. And most importantly, thank you, our congregation, who offered thoughtful insight, prayer, and encouragement every step of the way.
We conclude with the words of our new Rector, “I am overjoyed to be called as your new rector. The richness of your many cultures, your extraordinary music, your traditions ancient and new – what treasures! I cannot wait to learn all about these blessings, and to discover how the Holy Spirit is calling us forward together. I will see you soon. In the meantime, God’s peace be with you!!”
Mother Kate plans to begin work at St. James’ this August. Please keep Mother Kate, Mother Jenifer, the staff, and your Vestry in your prayers as we continue the process of transition and new beginnings.
With joy and gratitude,
Steve Yeazell, Senior Warden
Emily Abbott, Junior Warden
