Candlemas and Celebrating New Ministry

February 2 is Candlemas, also known as the Feast of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple, which happened 40 days after Jesus was born. It is a beautiful day for celebrating Christ’s light, just as we did at the Nativity and again on Epiphany. In the Temple, the priest Simeon calls the Christ child the light of the word, and the prophet Anna praises God and tells one and all about how Jesus would bring redemption.

Over time, Candlemas has become the day all the candles in churches are blessed, and people present their household candles for blessing too. Truly a day, deep in winter, for celebrating light. This year, we choose February 2 as the day to celebrate our new ministry together with Reverend Kate, the first woman rector to be called at St. James’ (the prophet Anna might have been pleased!). This celebration of new ministry is an “installation.” Please mark your calendar and plan to attend this lively ceremony on Saturday, February 2 at 11am, with lunch to follow. The day promises to be lively and important celebration of a new chapter in the life of St. James’ In-the-City.

Mother Kate encourages everyone attending her installation to wear traditional dress of your home culture. View invitation.
